The Most Popular Neighborhoods for Epic Employees, Mapped

About the data

Epic doesn't publish where its employees live, but the U.S. Census Bureau does something close. Its LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) link every job in the country to the census block where the worker lives, using state unemployment insurance records.

Epic's Verona campus sits almost entirely within a single census block, so the jobs counted there are effectively Epic jobs. In 2023, the most recent year available, that block held 10,901 jobs, up from 9,460 a year earlier. Of those workers, 10,499 lived in Wisconsin, and nearly 95% of them lived in Dane County.

The map below shows, for each Dane County census tract, the share of employed residents who work on the Epic campus. A tract shaded at 15% means roughly one in seven working people living there commutes to Epic.

How does that compare to Epic's size? The commonly quoted figure of 13,000+ employees is Epic's total global workforce. The Census count reflects only the Verona campus, and it lines up with Wisconsin's employer records, which list Epic's Verona headquarters in the 5,000–9,999 employee range. A few caveats remain: the Census counts jobs at one point in the year and adds small amounts of statistical noise to protect privacy. Treat the numbers as a strong picture of where Epic's Verona workforce lives, not an exact count.

Where Epic employees live, by city

When I started looking at this data, I expected the City of Madison to account for maybe 35 to 40 percent of Epic's Verona workforce. The actual number is much higher. Of the roughly 10,500 Epic campus workers who live in Wisconsin, about 6,400 live in the City of Madison. That's more than six in ten, despite a commute to Verona five days a week. Verona and Fitchburg, the two cities closest to campus, account for fewer than one in five combined.

How these numbers were calculated: The Census Bureau's LODES data records the home census block of every worker employed on Epic's campus block. Each home block was matched to its city, village, or town using the Census Bureau's official LODES geography crosswalk, then totaled. Because the matching happens at the block level, which is much smaller than a census tract, these totals follow actual municipal boundaries. Shares are of the 10,499 Epic campus workers who live in Wisconsin (2023).

The neighborhoods with the most Epic employees

Within those cities, Epic employees cluster in a handful of neighborhoods, and the list below ranks them by the share of working residents who work at Epic.
